May Meeting Report

The Chamber met on Mon, May 20 with a large group in attendance. The meal was provided by Cactus Jax. President Nan Holt called the meeting to order and asked that each member introduce themselves. The treasurer's report was given and new members from the Central Virginia Gold Prospectors were welcomed. Brian LaFontaine presented a proposed project that the Scottsville Chamber would like to have our Chamber join. Venus Powers of the Buckingham Arts Council presented the "Show & Tell" for the meeting. After brief reports on the Motorcycle Show, the 2nd printing of the county map and the Annual Pet Contest were given, announcements were made from Buckingham Artist's Guild and Historic Buckingham.

VP Faye Shumaker introduced our speaker of the evening, Mary Hickman, Commonwealth Regional Council, Planning Director.   Ms Hickman gave a brief overview of what her organization does and then shared with us some of the projects in Buckingham that she has been and continues to be involved with. She shared that the local businesses are so important to the structure of the growth in our area. She passed out a questionnaire and asked each of us to answer the following:

  1. What things exist in the Co now that are positives or strengths for our businesses?
  2. What exists in the Co now that could be enhanced to keep existing businesses moving forward?
  3. What do you think is missing in Buckingham and should be added to keep existing businesses moving forward?
  4. What negative obstacles exist that might cause a weakness to our businesses? I urge you to answer these questions on the back of your newsletter and bring them to the next meeting for discussion. The meeting adjourned at 8:30. Ms Hickman chose Madeline's House in Farmville as the recipient of the $50 donation that we provide in honor of our speaker.
