September Meeting Report

30 members and guests were present as VP Patti Throckmorton introduced Investigator Mike Mabry of the Buckingham Sheriff's Department. Capt Darrell Hodges and Deputy Myron Gordon accompanied him. Mr Mabry shared information on gang activity in the county. He told what to look for and encouraged people to always follow their intuition. If something doesn't feel or look right, contact the BSO and let them know of your concerns. Mr Mabry also shared pictures of body marks and tattoos, all from people arrested here in the county. Included in his pictures were symbols on books and papers that should warn parents about gang activity in which their student may be involved.

Capt Hodges interjected about the number of guns that have been taken in B & E's and also the difficulty in getting parents to understand the seriousness of the fact that "good youth and teens" may be associating with gang members. He also reminded us when we see a youth whom we perceive to be a "good kid" in a group, which appears questionable; we should not assume it is an okay situationÉ Good kids can become involved in gangs, too.

Many in the audience had questions - One was "Did the BSO request 2 additional positions only to be turned down by the Supervisors?" Capt Hodges shared that citizens will say that "Safety" is their most important concern, but when the time comes to spend the money to make the county safer, the vote is usually "No". Capt Hodges did touch on Sheriff William's promise to give 24-hour protection - a promise he has been able to keep.

Deputy Gordon, who works in the school system, encouraged parents to take more time with their children.

These 3 men spoke on their own time & have offered to come to any group interested in hearing their message.

President Marty Martin presided over a brief business meeting after the speakers concluded.

Business Tips

Getting and using customer names is a very simple tactic that your competition might overlook. Customers in survey after survey complain about being treated like a number, so make sure that your company doesn't do that. From: 151 Quick Ideas to Get New Customers by Jerry Wilson, CSP
