August Meeting Report

President Marty Martin welcomed 30 members and guests at the Aug meeting. Dillwyn Depot provided the meal. Brief reports were given on the Sept membership drive to be featured in the Beacon. Also Grandparents' Day scheduled for Sept 10 at Heritage Hall was announced.

Nan Holt spoke on the popularity of the Pet Contest and shared a plan for an Animal Fair.

Roberta Foster touched on the Christmas House Tour with a letter going out to ask people to participate on Dec 10. Mr Massie said that a bus would be available for the Chamber again this year.

Patti Throckmorton told of the newcomer's group - Buckingham Neighbors' Network or the "BNN" which has been formed with the following officers:

JC Breeden, Secretary
Ed Hearn, Treasurer
The organization has a 3-fold purpose.
1. To assist newcomers to the county with info & in meeting new people.
2. To offer Chamber members an opportunity to tell about their goods and services.
3. To encourage county organizations to present their platforms and programs to newcomers and attract new members. A motion was made and passed to donate $250 from the Chamber to the BNN for start-up expenses. Members of the BNN will be asked to pay $10 dues.

The first event will be on Saturday, Oct 14th at the VFW Hall on Rat 60 from 4 to 6pm.

Guest Speaker, Mr. Larry Massie, spoke to the group. He shared a plaque that Buckingham Primary recently received. Mr. Massie also gave reasons for the need for better facilities. He shared that 5 of the 6 county schools are accredited and he expects the 6th school to be accredited next year. He then took questions from the audience.

Each year the Chamber accepts essays on why Buckingham's grandparents deserve recognition. These essays are faxed out of the county - this year to Staunton where a nursing home staff chooses the best essays. This year we had more entries than usual, which made the job more difficult!
