September 2004 NewsletterAugust Meeting ReportThe Chamber met on Tuesday, August 17 with 30 members and guests present. On our menu were Clubs from Town Mini-Mart & a surprise Peach Trifle from Carole Gathright! President Tony Martin introduced Sheriff Danny Williams. Sheriff William spoke on the hurdles that he faced upon taking the office in January. He addressed the need for reliable vehicles for all deputies & advised that in addition to the 5 new vehicles authorized by the Board of Supervisors, he has been able to remove equipment from the oldest of the fleet & upgrade some of the units still in service with the help of Billy Moss of Moss Motor Co. This was done at considerable savings to the Sheriff's Office & the county. He told of promotions within the department & of going to 12-hour shifts, giving the county 24-hour protection. He spoke of future plans on the Dare Program in the schools, of the re-instatement of CrimeSolvers and of the new drug dog. He thanked Curtis Wharam of Wharam's Welding for preparing the necessary vehicles for the canine units. Sheriff Williams told of the many tips his office is receiving & how they act quickly in order to solve crimes. He stressed cooperation between the businesses, citizens & his office to accomplish reduction in criminal activity. He gave examples of action that have taken place & took questions from the audience. He closed with an invitation to his First Annual Community Cook-Out to be held on August 29th at Allen's Lake. Shelton Foster spoke as a businessperson, member of the School Board & member of the Fire Dept. He thanked Sheriff Williams for his assistance with the school system & for his protection of the county's children. Hank Hagenau gave a brief Planning Commission report. Marty Martin spoke about the Farmers' Market with a reminder of Family Fridays. Upcoming events are our annual Pet Contest on Sept 24 & the Famous Cake Auction for CrimeSolvers on Oct 15 - both at the Market. For tickets call 800-451-6318 September Board MeetingThe Chamber Board of Directors voted to send a check in the amount of $150 to Karen Amaral to compensate her for the dinners that she was not allowed to sell at the Farmers' Market. We appreciate her efforts. The Board welcomed new Board member, Patti Throckmorton. Patti works in the Social Services office in Buckingham & brings new ideas to our group. Also present were Betty Palmore & her daughter Jessica. Betty is working on the Best Grandparents' Contest for 2004.
