January Meeting Report

The 2nd Annual Chamber Awards Banquet was held on January 19th at Cactus Jax with 69 members and guests in attendance. Gerald Spates, Farmville Town Manager provided retail figures for the Town of Farmville and spoke to us on the importance of business & government cooperation.

Shelton Foster & Donald Hudgins received Volunteer of the Year Awards. Ed Saxon received the first Buckingham Achievement Award.

The Silent Auction was successful with $567 received. The Napa Socket set was the high money raiser at $40.

Crimesolvers Back on Track The Chamber has been contacted by Sheriff Danny Williams to ask that we consider providing some funding for Crimesolvers.

The Chamber was instrumental when Crimesolvers began several years ago. We provided $1200 in start-up funding and then held 2 fundraisers for additional money. When the organization folded under the previous administration, the Chamber asked for & received a portion of our money back. Discussion on this issue will be held at our February meeting.

Chamber Board Meeting

Directors met on Monday, February 2. Farmers’ Market plans are being made. A letter of request is being sent to Buckingham Board of Supervisors for use of the Industrial Park. Tentative date of the first market is April 16 with the Grand Opening featuring fireworks & music scheduled for Friday, April 30th.

Two goals for the coming year are to promote interaction between the Chamber and County government and to sponsor programs of interest to the small business owner.

Award Winners

The nomination for Shelton Foster as Volunteer of the Year was submitted by Sheriff Danny Williams who stated, “Shelton deserves this award because of his association with the Dillwyn Fire Department. Shelton joined the department at the age of 18 and has served as Chief for the past 24 years. He averages going on approximately 80 calls a year and in addition, he spends at least 10 hours a month on administrative duties as chief.”

Donald Hudgins received the Volunteer of the Year Award based on a nomination by Wanda & Gary Albrecht. Donald is the originator of the Christ in Christmas Chain which has operated for the past 6 years. The volunteer program benefits needy residents in Buckingham Cumberland and Fluvanna. With the help of local businesses and churches, Donald raised nearly $7000 in 2003!

Congratulations to these three gentlemen and Thank You for all you’ve done for your community.

February Meeting

David Whitehurst, Director of Wildlife Diversity at the Dept of Game & Inland Fisheries will speak to us on Birding Trails in Virginia.
