The Chamber met Tues, April 17 at the Squad building. President, Nan Holt called the meeting to order. Wise Ridge supplied the salad, lasagna, bread & dessert. Everyone enjoyed the meal! A brief business meeting followed. New members were named, results of the Super Bake Sale were announced & Charlie’s List was discussed. After dinner, David Wise of Farm Family Insurance spoke to us about insurance coverage and needs. A Certificate of Insurance, which a person should require when having a contractor do work, was of particular interest to the group. David was kind enough to bring 2 door prizes – an umbrella, won by Phyllis Mast and a cooler, won by John & Mo Sykes, our two newest members. David chose Heartland Horse Heroes as the recipient of the honorarium the Chamber gives our monthly speaker.

Liz Brand of Lionheart Resort won the 50/50 drawing. A special drawing was held from the names of members who had called the Chamber to RSVP for the meeting. John Sykes won his choice of a Banana Split or two regular sundaes from the Dillwyn Dairy Freeze.

A lighter crowd than usual attended the October meeting on Tuesday 18th, but each person went home well-fed, thanks to the Annual Cook-Off which was titled “A Taste of Europe”! President Janet Miller called the meeting to order and a brief business meeting was conducted. Each dish was given a number and the group got to work! After dinner our speakers for the evening were Liz Brand & Wade Brand of Lionheart. They shared the extensive plans for the facility, both immediate and long-range. Lionheart consists of 400 acres formerly occupied by New Dominion School & property that belonged to the Huddleston family. They also took questions from the audience. Ms Browning chose the Buckingham Rescue Squad as the recipient of the honorarium that the Chamber gives each month. Also we are currently having a 50/50 drawing at each meeting & this month’s winner was Trich Stone of Cheryl Martin CPA.

The group made a unilateral decision that is was impossible to choose 1 dish as the winner, so the desserts were divided into 1 category and the main meal into another. Main dish winner was Irish Corn Beef & Cabbage by Melissa (and Sammy) Smith! Dessert winner was a great Cheesecake by Eddie Slagle! Both winners receive a dues-free 2012!

The August meeting of the Chamber was called to order by President Janet Miller & a great meeting it was! Extra chairs were brought in! Perhaps it was the speakers – Sherri McGuire, Exec Director & Gary Shanaberger of the Longwood Small Business Development Center gave an excellent presentation on the upcoming Small Business Expo. Perhaps it was the meal, prepared by Phyllis Mast of the Courthouse Cafe, perhaps it was the enthusiasm from the Cowboy Day/Tourism meeting held just prior to the regular meeting. Many reasons made it our best-attended meeting of the year with the exception of the Awards Banquet in January. We hope to see everyone back next month!

Survey Question #3

Taken from the survey conducted in our May Chamber meeting!

In your opinion what are the strengths of the Chamber? And the answers were:

Leadership, opportunity to network, friendly, enthusiasm, ability to discuss business strengths & weaknesses, discussions of county issues, 160 members strong, great source of information, the people.

May Meeting Report

The May 17th Chamber meeting was moved indoors to the Squad Building due to the threat of a storm. We will meet at the clock plaza later in the year for our walking tour with Bill Lewis Moss. Seay Davis of Cactus Jax brought an abundant supply of food, which was shared with Rescue Squad members. President Janet Miller called the meeting to order. First time attendees, Betty Moss of RG Moss Electrical, Sue Harris & Lacie Duncan of Red Eagle were welcomed. Also new members, Eddie & Marie Slagle and Tim & Theresa McMannus joined us. After the brief business meeting, the members formed 5 groups & filled out questionnaires about the county and the Chamber. Each group reported on answers to various questions & turned in their forms to be reported on at a later date.

Random thoughts – Assuming that we all would like to improve and grow our businesses and our professions. The city of Richmond gave very little credence to NASCAR racing for many years. It was looked on as a group of visitors to the city who tied up traffic. The local newspapers & TV stations provided little coverage before, during or after the fact. Then when the economy slowed, a light bulb seemed to go on! NASCAR fans bring millions into the area twice a year. With the slow economy, the fan base has lessened and this past spring a huge push began to capitalize on NASCAR. Now I’m not suggesting we will ever have an attraction the size of NASCAR, but my thoughts are let’s not wait to begin capitalizing on the various things that Buckingham has to offer. As a Chamber, as individual businesses,

Let’s work together to call attention to our businesses & to our area!
